Why Confidence Is More Important Than Experience

When it comes to job hunting or advancing your career, most people focus heavily on experience, the number of years in a role, the technical skills acquired, the accomplishments listed on a resume. While experience does matter, there’s something even more powerful that often gets overlooked.

Confidence.

In many cases, confidence can get you further than experience ever will. It’s the key to landing interviews and making a lasting impression that will get your foot in the door and often help you stay there.

Confidence Shapes Perception

Employers don’t always hire the most qualified candidate on paper, but they hire the one who appears most capable and convincing.

Confidence influences how others perceive you and helps makes people believe in your potential. When you speak clearly about your skills, show enthusiasm for the role, and project a strong presence, employers assume you can handle the job even if you don’t check every box.

On the contrary, a lack of confidence makes people question your readiness.  It’s not about faking it, but about owning your value, even if your experience is still growing.

Confidence Drives Action

You can have years of experience, but without confidence, you may hesitate to apply for that dream job, ask for that promotion, or speak up in meetings. Confidence pushes you to:

  • Apply for roles outside your comfort zone
  • Speak up about your ideas and take initiative
  • Handle rejection with resilience
  • Negotiate salary and advocate for yourself
  • Keep learning and pushing your limits

People who act confidently get more opportunities because they go after them and more importantly, they believe they’re worthy of those opportunities.

Confidence Shows You’re Coachable

Leaders often say,

“We can teach skills, but we can’t teach attitude.”

Even if someone has limited experience, but carries a confident, can-do mindset, they will come out on top over someone who may be more seasoned but unsure or disengaged.

Confidence signals qualities that are highly sought after in a candidate, especially in fast-paced industries or team-oriented roles.:

  • A growth mindset
  • Adaptability
  • Willingness to learn
  • Positive energy
  • Leadership potential

Experience Doesn’t Guarantee Performance

Let’s be real, just because someone has done a job for 10 years doesn’t mean they were great at it or will continue to be good at it in their next job. Experience alone doesn’t prove someone can:

  • Solve new problems
  • Work well with others
  • Think creatively
  • Handle pressure
  • Learn new systems

On the other hand, a confident person with less experience may bring fresh thinking, ask better questions, and challenge the status quo. They may outperform the “experienced” candidate simply because they believe they can and that belief drives better results.

Building Confidence (Even Without Experience)

If confidence is more important than experience, how can you build it one may ask? Here are a few strategies:

  1. Prepare like a pro: Research the company, practice your elevator pitch, and prep your answers with frameworks like STAR. Preparation builds confidence.
  2. Reframe your story: Focus on transferable skills. Maybe you don’t have five years in marketing, but your work in sales involved communication, strategy, and data — those are relevant!
  3. Use body language: Sit up straight, make eye contact, and speak clearly. Your body tells your brain (and others) that you belong.
  4. Start small: Say yes to new projects, speak in meetings, or apply for jobs you’re 70% qualified for. Confidence grows with action.
  5. Affirm your value: Remind yourself daily of what you can do. Confidence is a mindset, and it’s built through repetition and belief.

There’s no question that experience is a valuable asset that a candidate can bring to a team. However, experience without confidence may mean that someone has never been knowledgeable or good at their job and they may be questioning their career choices, but have no other options than to continue that career path.

On the other hand, confidence is what unlocks opportunities and open doors. It fuels risk-taking, resilience, growth and it helps you move from potential to performance. If you’re holding yourself back because you think you’re not “experienced enough”, it’s time to flip the script and start showing up like you belong because you do. Soon, you’ll get the experience you didn’t have and have the confidence to utilize it to propel your career!
