What Job Seekers Look For When Deciding On A New Job

Job Seekers look for new jobs for many reasons.  When you’re unemployed, there is an obvious reason, but when you’re working, those reasons maybe more difficult to see.  No matter what the reasons may be, it seems that everyone are looking for the same things when it comes to finding a new job.

Below are just a few of the most common things that Job Seekers look for regardless of the company in consideration (Big or Small, Well-known or not):

1) Better Pay

There are definitely more factors these day for Job Seekers to consider when deciding on a new job opportunity.  But no matter how may things there are to consider, the number one deciding factor remains to be the salary (including any bonuses and commissions).  Most people when you ask them will not leave their current positions for anything less than what they’re currently making, and the question remains to be how much more will it take for them to leave their current roles.

2) Benefits

Benefits are part of the compensation package that many Job Seekers look at when review an offer.  Sometimes the number one question that is asked, even before any discussion has been made about the opportunity, is whether a company offers benefits.  This proves to be especially important for those with a family or require regular medical attention that a benefit package can make a difference.

3) Flexible work hours

While the traditional business model of the standard 8:30 to 5:00 or 9:00 to 5:00 may still work for most people, more and more Job Seekers are looking for flexible work hours that could fit their lives outside of work.  Some common reasons for flexible hours include: dropping off / picking up young children to / from day care, and avoiding rush hours.

4) Work from Home

Along the lines of flexibility, more and more Job Seekers are looking for options that allow them to work at home sometimes or all the time.  With the advancement in technology and our ability to communicate without having to be in the same room, most jobs can now be done remotely and some people perform their best in the comforts of their homes without wasting a lot of time on the road to and back from the office.

5) Growth / Development Opportunities

In many cases, Job Seekers are not just looking to switch a job, but for career opportunities.  They are searching for opportunities that would allow them to grow with a company and companies who are willing to invest in them to help them develop into better professionals and leaders.

6) Stability

No matter how attractive an offer package may be, a Job Seeker will not be interested if there is no stability or job security.  People need to know that they will not be leaving a job to take on something new that is not going to last more than 3 or 6 months.

7) Location

Location, Location, Location.  People are less willing to jump at a new opportunity when it adds significant time to their daily commute.  The stress of being on the road takes a toll on you to start off the day before you get to work and after a long day at work when you just want to get home as quick as you can.  Job Seekers are attracted to opportunities that are closer to home.

8) Work / Life Balance

While it is true that many people would consider themselves hard workers and they would give their 100% at work, these same people would also tell you that they need to have a Work / Life Balance in order to be able to do that.  It is important to Job Seekers that they are not getting themselves into situations where they will have to say goodbye to their families, friends, hobbies, and give all their attention to their new job.

These may not be the extensive list of all the things that Job Seekers look for when considering a new opportunity, but Job Seekers are telling us that these are some of the most commons things that they look for in 2019.
